Title: CHAIN CASSETTE PROJECT
Post by: kinjack on January 19, 2018, 01:11:55 PM
Hi all,

As suggested by Mike, I've started a thread for the chain cassette project.

The idea is that a cassette is posted from musician to musician, with each person contributing a new instrumental track (or tracks?) to the song, hence 'chain'. We're provisionally thinking of starting the cassette in the U.K and then posting it over to the U.S (a second British Invasion).

Obviously any instruments are welcome, and we'll have to spend time working out how this could happen. If you're provisionally interested though, please drop a comment below and we can create an email group!  8)

Are there any 424 users out here in the UK?

Will

Me and Jay will do something for sure once the tape reaches to US. Either together or I'll hand it off to him. Also, my bud David Paul in Cali will be more than happy to contribute. I know Joel in the UK will surely be down as well. I'll schedule a live stream about it or post a video in February explaining the project. It's gonna be fun. Can't wait!

424 Cassette chain letter project

I saw a cassette chain letter project in another forum where people would record on a 424 and send the cassette to others via mail.  They would make a digital mix at each stage in case the tape was lost.  For instance I'd record a drum beat To track one of a cassette then mail to Mike and he'd add another instrument on track two then he'd make a backup mix in case cassette gets lost in mail then he'd mail it to the next person to add track 3 and so on and so forth.  It is cool because people have different instruments and styles.  Even different mixing.  It all makes for a cool end product with different versions.  Who is up for it?  If people are up for it I'll try to get the rules they used on the other forum to go by.  Oh yeah and they would take a picture of the cassette in their area.  Here's the link:

https://www.gearslutz.com/board/low-end-theory/847108-join-us-4-track-cassette-trading-chain-letter-team-lofi.html

They had really cool and interesting results!!  The tracks are a little way down on the page.

Maybe we should go by the same or similar guidelines but drop stereo cassette decks and Dolby B unless a lot of people have those.  I would think we'd stick to making sure to use DBX and record on high speed with pitch control at 12:00 so there would be no problems in those departments with machine compatibility.   Also I don't know if anyone is interested but taking a picture of the tape at the different locations is a pretty cool part of it too.  Does anyone have any name suggestions?  4 track collaborative?

My Studio
JOIN US! 4-Track Cassette Trading Chain Letter - TEAM LOFI
WHAT IS TEAM LOFI?
In short, somebody records one track on a standard stereo cassette deck or a 4-track cassette tape multitrack-recorder and sends it to somebody else. He then records the 2nd track and sends it to somebody else, etc. The one who records the last track, mixes the piece and posts the results.
Because everybody can start a new tape or send out multiple tapes, tapes should come in randomly and often.
The goal is not getting the best sounding and performed song in the end, but it's more about the process itself which can be very fun, surprising, inspiring and positively unpredictable.
This format allows people to join this thing on the fly and even step out of it anytime.

We don't really have rules, so just take the following as some guidelines or recommendations:

I WANT TO JOIN THIS ÜBERCOOL THING, WHAT NOW?
No problem, new people can join anytime!
You just need a 4-track cassette tape recorder of any kind or a stereo cassette deck, but this can only be used for starting a tape
Just PM me (RiF) your full name and mailing address and I will update the complete mailing list to everybody on Team Lofi via PM
Start sending out tapes right away

I WANT DO START A TAPE, WHAT NOW?
Record your stuff on track #1 of the tape (or the left channel if you're using a stereo deck), preferably with a 1 bar click count-in. It does not matter what you record, but think briefly about the others who want to add more tracks. A click track can be recorded to track #4 if you think it will help others
Name the tape "TEAM LOFI, tape name" , where tape name is a name for the project. Be creative and make sure that two tapes floating around don't have the same name
Note tape speed and noise reduction type on the inlay. The common format is double speed/DBX, but we have members with single speed and Dolby B as well. If possible take that into account
Note track number, your GS member name and the type of track (e.g. "Drums") on the inlay, leaving room for 3 more lines for the other tracks
Send it to somebody else in the current Team Lofi. It does not matter to whom, just make sure you don't send multiple tapes out to the same person
you can start a tape anytime and send it out. There's no need to wait for anything

I GOT A TAPE IN THE MAIL, WHAT NOW?
Don't erase what's on the tape already
Choose the next free track and record something that you think could match ("match" is a flexible term…) the existing tracks. Just record one mono track.
Note track number, your GS member name and the type of track on the inlay
Send it to somebody else in the Team Lofi. It does not matter to whom, just make sure you don't send multiple tapes out to the same person
Tourist photos of your tape in your home town would be cool

I GOT A TAPE, BUT I CANNOT RECORD ANYTHING (FOR WHATEVER REASON), WHAT NOW?
Please be so kind and send the tape to somebody else. please, please, please! There's creativity and effort and fun on the tape already, so please don't let it die

I AM ON TEAM LOFI, BUT I WANT TO QUIT (FOR WHATEVER REASON), WHAT NOW?
Please send a PM to me (RiF), so I can remove you from the list and inform all the other members

I RECORDED THE LAST TRACK ON THE TAPE, WHAT NOW?
Do a stereo mix, convert it to a 256kbs MP3 and post it here on the thread
It would be great if you could record the unmixed individual tracks into your computer and upload them as four 24bit/44KHz Mono WAV files somewhere. I will then download them and archive them for later remixing or whatever and will provide them to anybody who's asking for them (if he's from Team Lofi, of course)
Store the cassette in a safe place

OK, enough with this! I need to go upstairs and unwrap a few TDK SA's now!

OK I'm glad people are up for this. To move it forward...

IF ANYONE IS INTERESTED - please could you leave your email address below, or send it to me via private message with your location and any instruments you could potentially contribute. I'll turn it into a list.

Exodus you have a good point, we could use the Gearslutz rules as a base, but I think we should have our own separate 424 version. I'll read through them and create a set of instructions we can send to those interested.

And DEFINITELY should take pictures. Would be cool if people could get them with the tape near a local sign/landmark to prove its been all around the world.

And Joel, I'm down in Reading. I play guitar mostly but have a few vintage synths which might be cool.

Peace out guys  8)

Sounds like a really cool idea - I'm interested for sure, but am still sourcing a 4-track (I have one in my sights, though). Hopefully I can join in on the fun in a couple of months!

Sounds good, Dhayv.

Jay, I'm gonna be the last stop in the chain... perhaps we could do a live mix/master of the tracks at the studio? If you want, we can add some tracks together!

Hey, I made two topics on this board, one for each of the tapes! We've got one tape originating in the UK which is ending at 424 HQ and one tape originating in the US ending at Will's pad. If you have any questions or updates regarding either one of the tapes, hit up the corresponding thread!

UK Originated thread: http://www.424recording.com/forum/index.php?topic=152.0

US Originated thread: http://www.424recording.com/forum/index.php?topic=153.0

Although at some point the project may be deemed ''complete''.

June 2018 Update:

CCP UK based tape is chilling at Will's for a minute. He's gonna be finishing up his track and sending it along.

CCP US based tape is currently hanging with David Paul in LA. After that, it will be sent along to JRADD and then our Canadian brethren, David and Mike.

Hit up the thread if you want in on it!

Peace, fam!

Dope! Glad to hear it's still kicking!

If ya wanna send it to me, Will, send it to:

Mike @ 424 Recording
PO Box 151
New Paltz, NY 12561

Not sure what the list is up to but I could do a vid on it and show everyone what's cracking. Which makes me wonder about the other tape...
