2nd Annual Fall Song Challenge is here!
« on: September 21, 2018, 03:11:03 PM »
Hey, so I've decided I'm going to be recording a metal song/album for this year's Fall Song Challenge. Here's a link to this year's inaugural vid: https://youtu.be/0MTvm9MnwUs

Comment on this thread or on the video and let's record something awesome this fall.

General guidelines (feel free to do whatever works for ya!):
1. Use any recording medium (I'll be doing digital demos and 4-track finals)
2. Set a track limit for your song(s)
3. Deadline is 10/19 for songs and 10/26 for videos
4. Record in any genre
5. Pick a song to mix and master to
6. Don't buy anything new
7. Keep us up to date on this thread or on the update videos each week
8. Determine a schedule for yourself
For me, I'm rocking:
9/21 - 9/28 Metal Zone Jamming
9/28 - 10/5 - Song Compositions
10/5 - 10/12 - Mixing/Mastering
10/12 - 10/19 - Music Video
10/19 or 10/26 - Release Date
9. Have fun!

You can check out last year's playlist here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLxvSYDmM5dioNRie4xEY3eZlfpoVcPjMb

Check out the final product here: https://youtu.be/qYOlYYyGQ7w

Bonus Be Cool Cowboy track, Fall Forever, in honor of the greatest season on earth!: https://youtu.be/CxR615UxnFQ

Ok, I'm in!  Works out well!  Just started working on a new song that I was going to do for tutorials for a DP-008.  I'll get back to you with a time line, that I don't know yet.  Should have it done by mid November. :)

It'll be a power pop song, I'll do all the instrumentation myself.  Looking forward to this!

1. Use any recording medium
   * Using a DP-008 for recording, doing mix down on my DP-32SD
2. Set a track limit for your song(s)
   * 8 Tracks, no bouncing (max on the DP-008)
3. Deadline is 10/19 for songs and 10/26 for videos
   * I won't be able to make that deadline, I'll be done probably closer to the end of October, but I'll try.  I'm currently finishing another song.
4. Record in any genre
   * Power Pop Tune
5. Pick a song to mix and master to
   * I won't have song to mix and master.  I generally like to use the default settings on the DP-32 and which ever I like the sound of, that's the one I'll use :)
6. Don't buy anything new
   * I can't afford to buy anything.
7. Keep us up to date on this thread or on the update videos each week
   * I'll post videos on my website.  https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCLb8MhOVPKNEGNy2sCrKMNA
8. Determine a schedule for yourself

Now until October 15th, finishing another song
   October 15 - 21 - Scratch track and importing to DP-008
   October 22 - 28 - Drums, Guitar, Bass and Vocals (I'll try)
   October 29 - Nov 4 - Make a videos
   November 5 - 11th - Show video?
   November 12th - 19 - Discuss process...Hmmm...

Hope this is okay for you.

Started laying down some tracks on the 424 last night. It's a beast compared to the 414. I always forget how hard it is to record to tape! But I've got a few new songs that are crispy and fall like!

Oh, damn! Can't wait to hear them, Jason!

Are you finding them similar enough, re: 414 to 424?

Definitely, I feel like it's pretty intuitive if you've had experience with one. It's just the sheer size of the 424! It's crazy huge!

Nice!

Yeah, it's a different beast but a lot of the same functionality once you get used to it. Basically, more functions on each channel  8)

Ay Yo Wat up!

Just finished my first song or the fall song challenge! Cheggit out! https://soundcloud.com/enya_face/temple-of-1000-skulls

I got a late start due to moving to a new place, but I'm glad I got this done!

I used a Fostex MR-8 digital Portastudio for the acoustic guitar, and recorded bass, drums and synth to my Tascam Porta 02. Everything was recorded through an FMR Real Nice Compressor and my cheap Behringer Xenyx 802 mixer. I dumped  the final mix back through the FMR RNC onto my laptop and used Cubase 4 LE to add some final EQ.

This is the quickest thing i've recorded and I'm proud i resisted the urge to tinker and fiddle with shit and just got it done. A construction crew was putting a new roof on my apartment complex and my kitchen ceiling caved in as a result, but I STILL finished it, Dammit!

I used my digital portastudio to record 4 different tracks of my acoustic guitar and adjusted the tuning on each take for a natural chorus effect. Then I bounced the four tracks to 1 track on my tascam. I had to do this quick while the construction crew was at lunch! I do have a question about this technique: The guitar sounded great when recording and monitoring, but it seems to drop out a bit right around 1:25 during playback. I've had this problem before and it only seems to happen when i record acoustic guitar to tape with the method described above. Any thoughts on what could cause this? I recorded acoustic guitar the same way in https://soundcloud.com/enya_face/the-fate-of-zebes and the same thing happened.

Sorry for the long post!

Wow, sounds like you've had quite the epic recording session and obstacles to get this track done. Kudos, Enya Face. Crushed it. Great track! Your story reminds me of the movie, "Stranger Than Fiction" when the construction crew blasts into Will Ferrell's apartment haha. Dealing with some similar stuff over here this week. Trying to blast out some vids the other day and the parking lot is getting jackhammered and repaved and on the other side, endless lawn mowing.

The only thing I can think of about the guitar dropping out is that is it possible that it is phasing out? How well does the guitar stay in tune?

Haha yes Stranger than Fiction is a great movie!

The tuning on my guitar is pretty consistent but I was using a capo.  When i record acoustic this way it tends to come out kinda "boomy," and I remember you or jay mentioned that tape has a narrower frequency range so i think thats what it is.  I've cut out some of the low end with EQ and that seems to help.

Thanks for all you do man!

Fall Challenge is done over here! I ended up doing 4 super short songs. They all started out on the 424 and then a few overdubs were done on a very old version of Logic Express circa 2009. I wrote them all on an old Silvetone that I found in a thrift store last month, but ended up going electric for a couple of the songs. Hope you enjoy, thanks Mike for the push!

Peace.
